Spice Up Your Self Defense With the Firepower of Pepper Spray!

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The “heat” or “hotness” of chili peppers and consequently pepper sprays is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU) or the Scoville scale, named after the American chemist Wilbur Scoville. The presence of the chemical capsaicin is responsible for this pleasant or unpleasant degree of heat, depending on if you are talking to a hot wings connoisseur or an assailant with pepper spray dripping from his face.

For all you culinary folks or chili eaters, a sweet bell pepper is rated 0, containing no capsaicin. A pimento or pepperoncini is only mildly spicier with a 100-500 SHU rating. Green pepper Tabasco sauce may yield 600-800, regular pepper Tabasco at 2500-5000, and super spicy habanero Tabasco sauce topping out at 7000-8000 SHU. Widely popular jalapeño peppers rate around 2500-8000. BAM! Pure cayenne pepper typically packs enough capsaicin to reach 30,000-50,000, compared to more exotic 50,000-80,000 Thai peppers. Speaking of more exotic peppers, a Naga Jolokia pepper from India ranges from 850,000 to 110,000 and a Dorset Naga may reach 1,600,000 SHU, or 1.6 million units of fiery mouth burning hotness!

Capsaicin in its purest form has a Scoville rating that ranges from 15,000,000 to 16,000,000. Yes, that reads 16 million! The standard grade pepper sprays in the US usually achieve 2 to 5 million SHUs.

Pepper sprays are inflammatory, unlike Mace which is an irritant. Inflammatory agents will cause immediate closure of the eyes and will induce coughing, choking and nausea. Temporary blindness due to dilation of the eyes and the mucous membranes will swell up, effectively preventing all but life support breathing.

The effects may last from 20-45 minutes depending on the pepper spray’s strength. Popular pepper spray products, such as Pepper Shot are rated at 10% strength, boasting a SHU of 2 million. The Wildfire 18% contains enough Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) to achieve nearly 3 million Scoville Heat Units of stopping power. Bear strength Guard Alaska requires a higher concentration for those that venture into the woods, with at least a 20% concentration of capsicum firepower.

There are even triple action self defense sprays incorporating OC pepper, CN tear gas, and a UV marking dye. This potent combination sends your assailant into an uncontrollable fit of coughing and choking while his eyes are slammed shut. The CS tear gas causes a profuse tearing to the already affected eyes, as well as an intense burning sensation to the face. The UV marking dye marks the assailant and may assist in identification once apprehended.

Conveniently, many pepper sprays come on key chains. This is a good idea since most people will usually have their keys with them. But don’t forget about the times you don’t have your keys. The small investment in additional pepper spray may save your life or the life of a loved one! Then you will also always have your pepper spray within easy reach. You can also find covert pepper spray products such as pepper batons (kubotans), pepper pagers, lipstick spray, “Stunning Ring”, and hand weight Hot Walkers for walking and jogging. Pepper spray is also sold in gel stream formulas instead of liquid sprays. Gels have the advantages of longer distance, stronger pepper, very sticky on the target’s face and less contaminating overspray.

However, the best, strongest, and farthest ranged pepper spray in the world will amount to the SHU rating of that bell pepper if you fail to do three simple things: purchase some pepper spray, carry your pepper spray wherever you go and practice using it. This means buying extra pepper spray and actually “waste” it by discharging practice sprays to gauge the range of your product and improve your spraying accuracy. If you are going to under shoot or hit the wall next to an attacker, you mind as well pack your pockets with pimentos. Of course, with the affordability of peppered self defense products and the peace of mind you gain by being prepared, if you do ever find yourself in a pepper, err pickle… you can hardly consider it a waste.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Don’t be afraid to spice up your self defense, stay safe and be prepared!

Hot Stone Massages Are One Way to Boost Our Blood Circulation

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Did you know that blood is a tissue? Here are some other interesting facts about the blood in your body:

• Your body contain roughly 6 quarts (5.6 liters) of blood

• Blood daily travels about 12,000 miles

• Your heart beats approximately 35 million times each year

• During an average human lifetime, the heart will pump about a million barrels of blood. That is enough to fill up three supertankers!

Blood: our lifeline

We know that we need blood to live, but what exactly does it do for our bodies? The red colored liquid travels throughout our hearts, arteries, capillaries and veins. In its journey, the blood also does a little multi-tasking. It delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body’s issues, while removing metabolic waste from them. The blood is rich in protein, thickens when it contacts damaged tissue, helps to control the balance of fluids in humans, and aids in the body in maintaining the correct temperature.

In a nutshell, the blood is the lifeline of the body. So that explains why good blood circulation is so vital. The blood circulation is continuous, and involves a trip that would make any frequent flyer green with envy. First, the heart pumps out blood throughout tiny vessels in the body. Then the blood meets in the veins and returns back to the heart. Afterwards, the blood flows through our lungs, and then returns to the heart again.

A small world

In this complicated process, it is vital that blood flows properly through each part that needs it. For example, the brain gets about 15% of the blood that the heart pumps out. Meanwhile, when muscles contract, they produce “metabolites” that circulating blood removes. Blood must also flow properly from the coronary arteries, to the heart. This involves about 5% of blood that the heart pumps. Next, when you are in hot temperatures, more blood is pumped to your skin (think air conditioner), but nearly no blood is pumped there in cold temperatures. Blood circulation is also important for absorbing and digesting food. Finally, though kidneys are fairly small organs, they get roughly 20% of the blood that the heart pumps out.

Problems and solutions

So what happens when someone suffers from various blood circulation problems? Many discomforts form. These include cold hands and feet, aches that excess lactic acid in the muscles cause, exhaustion, and fluid in the toes.

Several methods can be used to improve blood circulation:

• Calendula Officinalis (pot marigold plant)

• Cayenne (created from dried peppers)

• Damiana (shrub native to Central America)

• Exercising (low-impact)

• Garlic

• Ginger

• Ginkgo (Asian tree)

• Hydrotherapy (translation: hot and cold showers)

• Onions

• Reetha (herb)

• Tamri Bancha (translation: soy sauce + tea)

• Ume-Sho-Bancha with ginger (drink)

• Wine with rosemary flowers or leaves

Massage, such as hot stone massages, is another ideal way to treat poor blood circulation. The massage method helps blood to move through areas where it is getting clogged up. Also, the pressure from the massage allows new blood to flow in. The massage’s pulling squeezing also removes lactic acid from the muscles. And the lymph fluid circulation is boosted. Lymph nodes are small groups of tissue where white blood cells are formed. This process is important, as the metabolic waste is transported away from the muscles and internal organs. The end result is that blood pressure is reduced and the body’s overall functioning is improved.

Blood circulation serves as one of the most important functions of our bodies, providing a lifeline to various tissues and organs. Poor blood circulation, though problematic, can be solved by using a variety of techniques, including massage with hot stones. That will give us the energy to continue through our day-to-day lives.

Zippy Barbecue Sauce Flavors Left-Over Pork

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

One of the most savory of all meat dishes is roast pork. But the housewife who counts on getting several meals from a roast, must know how to prepare tasty dishes from the left-overs as a guarantee against monotony in her second, third and possibly fourth day pork dinners. The same rule, of course, applies to any other type of roast.

Although you may be far away from the barbecue pits, the flavor and result are as good when leftover pork is served with a zippy barbecue sauce (recipe given below). A pork and potato casserole is another tasty way of changing leftover pork from the same old dish to something new. In pork loaf, made with ground cooked pork, the meat is given a brand new outlook on life. This dish (see recipe below) is served with a tomato and carrot sauce. The disguise, indeed, is so effective that the cook herself may have difficulty in recognizing it as a leftover dish when she joins the family at dinner.

Barbecue Sauce For Pork

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup chili sauce

1 cup vinegar

1 tablespoon chopped onion

1 clove garlic, peeled

1 teaspoon lemon juice

2 lemon slices

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1/2 pod red pepper, ground

8 to 12 slices leftover pork

Mix all ingredients except pork together well, and place over low heat until butter is melted. Cook slices of leftover pork in sauce long enough to heat them through: serve with extra sauce poured over meat. Serves 4 to 6.

Pork And Potato Casserole

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

3/4 teaspoon salt

7/4 cups milk

5 cups sliced potatoes

1 lb. sliced cold roast pork (about)

1 tablespoon pork drippings

Melt butter in saucepan. Stir in flour and salt. Add milk slowly; stir constantly until sauce boils and thickens. Add potatoes and heat until sauce boils again, shaking occasionally. Pour potatoes and sauce into greased casserole, cover, and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F.) 30 minutes. Just before serving, heat sliced pork in pork drippings until edges of fat are crisp. Place hot pork over potatoes. Serve piping hot. Serves 4 to 5.

Pork Loaf With Tomato And Carrot Sauce

2 eggs, slightly beaten

4 cups ground cooked pork

1/2 cup uncooked rice

3/4 cup milk

1.5 teaspoons salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Beat eggs slightly, combine with remaining ingredients. Turn into casserole, cover, and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F.) 1.5 hours. Serve hot with the following sauce:

2 tablespoons bacon drippings

1/2 clove garlic or 1 medium onion

3/4 cup grated carrot

3/2 cups tomatoes

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Melt drippings: pan-fry garlic or onion until brown. Add carrots and cook, covered, very slowly about 10 minutes or until carrots are tender. Add tomatoes, salt and pepper; heat thoroughly.

Molded Pork Salad

1 tablespoon gelatin

1/2 cup cold water

3/2 cups cooked tomatoes

1 slice onion

1 bay leaf

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 bouillon cube

1 small stalk celery

2 whole cloves

1 cup cooked pork, chopped

Soak the gelatin in cold water. Cook the tomatoes together with onion, bay leaf, salt, bouillon cube, celery and cloves for 15 minutes; add gelatin which has been dissolved in cold water. Stir well and strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. Pour a spoonful of the tomato liquid in each of six chilled individual molds and shake until it coats the sides and bottom. Add a bit of finely chopped parsley and sliced stuffed olive for a garnish. Add the meat and pour in the rest of the liquid. Chill, unmold, and serve on a bed of watercress or lettuce with a mayonnaise dressing.
